NO-CARVE

Paint, paper & the food boundary

Choose the decorative treatment first, then keep food fruit on a separate path.

No-carve covers different approaches

Loose paper leaves and a washable tray can leave a pumpkin intact. Painting, glue, glitter and other coatings create a different material combination. Label the finished fruit as decorative and do not mix it back into food preparation.

Follow the material instructions

Choose materials for the setting and the people using them. Follow paint and adhesive instructions, including ventilation, drying and age guidance. Supervise children and let an adult handle sharp tools. Craft materials are not made safe for food by a no-carve label.

Use removable pieces when possible

A tray, cloth or loose reusable decoration makes it easier to separate materials after the season. Keep paper under cover and remove it if it becomes wet. Avoid small loose pieces where children or animals can reach them.

Check disposal locally

Remove the decorative parts before disposal. Painted, glued or glittered fruit may not belong in an organics collection. Ask the local collection provider what it accepts; do not assume that every pumpkin can go in the same compost stream.
